Abstract This book draws together in one volume the many articles throughout The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments that relate to the 'king of instruments.' The main part of the book is occupied by the author's authoritative survey of the instrument's history, from the organ of classical antiquity and the Middle Ages to that of the present day. There are also discussions of related instruments such as the reed organ, cinema organ, barrel organ, and even the water organ. Also featured are a full list of organ stops, a discussion of their history and characteristics, and a separate essay on registration. Parts of the organ mechanism, technical terms, and terms of registration are all included in the glossary, which, with the comprehensive index of organ builders, completes the book.
